Tucker edges Jewell at Berea Invitational

RICHMOND — Eighty-nine golfers teed it up at Berea Country Club on July 9, 10 and 11th in the club’s annual Invitational Tournament.

Defending champion Ryan Tucker held off Randy Jewell to hang on to the crown for the second-straight year.

Prior to the start of the tournament there was the always-exciting 9-hole shootout, on Friday. After the smoke cleared the last man standing was Jay Simmons, who pocketed the moola. Here are the results of the tournament:

Championship flight: first— Ryan Tucker, 135; second — Randy Jewell, 136; third — Jason Vance, 139 and fourth — Kevin Lawson, 139.

First flight: first — Steve Brandenburg, 147; second — Mary Snowden, 149; third — Jimmy Kiser, 149 and fourth — Mark Spicer, 152.

Second flight: first — Elmo Greer, 154; second — Andrew Cash, 159; third — Shane Tarvin, 160 and fourth — Brad King, 160.

Third flight: first — Pete Dawes, 165; second — Nick Bowling, 165; third — Larry Sandefur, 165 and fourth — Dellas Rose, 167.

Fourth flight: first — Winfred Hughes, 173; second — Mike Robinson, 173; third — Doug Duerson, 174 and fourth — Matthew Vickers, 175.

After play on Saturday, players and their guests enjoyed an excellent dinner of filet mignon, baked potato, tossed salad and dessert. After dinner all enjoyed dancing to Sassafras, a band from Lexington.

It was another successful and enjoyable tournament at the old Berea Country Club. Forgive me for the tardy report on this tourney.

Number two on my Bucket List

On Nov. 7, I am headed to Hawaii for the last time in my life, on a golfing and sight-seeing trip. I have been many times and want to do it one more time before I say aloha.

Every year my Hawaiian family, of Diane and Craig Konno, conduct one tour back to their homeland. Craig’s father Dan (who started the tour) and his wife Barbara also have taken part every year. Barbara will be missed this year as she left us for that great course in the sky in April.

It is a 10-day tour from Nov. 7-17, with golfing four days and sight-seeing six days. This year, the tour is on the garden island Kaua’i. This is the most beautiful of the islands and Hollywood used it to film Jurassic Park, Blue Hawaii, From Here to Eternity, South Pacific and many more. The price is very reasonable and the Konnos show you a great time.

The reason I am making this pitch is not because I make anything on the trip. I just want some company and I know you will love the experience.

If you are interested, call me at 623-0970 and I will get you the details of the trip and answer questions.

Mahalo!

Ramblings

In a letter to the editor last Tuesday, Delroy Hisle stated that Emmitt Igo’s boxing and fitness center was made possible by a grant they received from the government.

This information was incorrect. Igo is paying the mortgage on the center from his retirement check. Sorry for any inconvenience this error may have caused.

Upcoming events

Madison Country Club — the ladies Member-Guest Tournament, originally scheduled for this Saturday, has been postponed until September.
