RICHMOND —
The Madco U14 and U18 softball teams traveled to Knoxville this past weekend and both squads placed second in their age groups.
The U14 team had to play seven games to take the runner-up title in its tournament while the 18s had to play five games on the final day of the tournament.
The Madco U14 played in the World Series Warm-up in Knoxville on Sunday. Madco had to come through the loser’s bracket and fought its way through, but ended up losing in the final to the Tennessee Nightmares, 3-1.
“It was great to have good showing at this tournament,” coach Ashley Dollins said. “We have been trying to improve every tournament, and these girls have put forth a lot of effort to get better.”
The Madco U18 played in the Big Orange College Showcase with 12 teams. Madco lost in the final to the Tennessee Fury, 2-1.
Madco had a 1-0 lead going into the final inning, but the Fury took advantage of two miscues and ended the game with a walk-off hit.
“We played hard all weekend. We were not our usual offensive team, but we have been struggling with a number of injuries,” coach Kelley Anderson said. “I was really pleased with the heart our team played with. It was a very difficult weekend playing four games on Saturday and five on Sunday.”
Madco Softball was developed to enhance the play of softball in the area, but to also develop future coaches. All Madco softball coaches have played Division I softball and have vast clinic and camp experience.
