Southern hosting football challenge

RICHMOND — Football fans will have an opportunity to get a first look at the 2012 Eagles football team and its district opponents during the first ever District Challenge from 4-9 p.m. on Monday at Madison Southern High School.

All six members of Class 5A, District 7 — Southern, Lincoln County, North Laurel, South Laurel, Pulaski County, Southwestern) — are scheduled to compete in the event.

Among the challenges are a 7-on-7 tournament and a Big Man Lineman Challenge, which consists of a fire truck push, tire flips, tire throws, bench competition and tug-o-war.

Traveling trophies will be awarded to the winning teams.

Last year Southern went 2-8 overall and 1-4 in district.

The Eagles expect to return nine starters on offense and defense.

Among those back are sophomore running back Damien Harris, who missed part of the season with an injury but still managed to rush for 742 yards and 11 touchdowns on only 62 carries.

Also back are senior running back Coty Russell (104 carries, 790 yards, nine touchdowns) and the quarterback tandem of junior Devante Linville (53-of-109 for 733 yards and three touchdowns) and senior Adam Simpson (50 carries, 374 yards, five touchdowns).

Other key players are senior defenisve lineman Brett Sipple (66 tackles, two sacks, one interception), senior defensive end Brydon Gill (19 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery), junior defensive lineman Derek Howard (30 tackles, one fumble recovery), junior defensive end Andrew Devere (76 tackles, one interception), senior defensive end Spencer Stone (26 tackles, two sacks), junior linebacker Tyler Hagan (115 tackles, three sacks, one interception), sophomore linebacker Aaron Sipple (84 tackles, one sack, one interception, two fumble recoveries) and junior defensive back Casey Dionne (53 tackles, two interceptions).  

Southern takes the field for the first time on Aug. 9 at home against Rockcastle County.
