BEREA —
The Berea Community boys soccer team opened the game with fireworks and closed the game with more fireworks, but in between Southwestern scored in bunches, downing the Pirates 4-2 Tuesday night.
Berea (2-4) scored 46 seconds into the contest when Austin Rose stole the ball from the Southwestern defense and passed to Andy Allen, who hit the back of the net for a quick 1-0 lead.
Southwestern (3-2-1) responded with four goals over a 20 minute span, taking a 4-1 lead into halftime.
“We had a kickoff play that got us down there and got us a deep throw and gave us an opportunity to do something with it and we did,” Berea coach Casey Poynter said of the early goal. “It’s just that the first half we were really out of our element. We dove too much, we stabbed, but that’s just what a young team does. We don’t make good decisions right now.”
The Pirates scored the only goal of the second half, with 15:17 to play.
Neil Claytor crossed to Derick Castle, who connected for the goal to cut the lead to 4-2.
Berea’s Trey Terrell played in goal in the second half, recording a shutout over the final 40 minutes.
Terrell is in his first year playing soccer for the Pirates.
“We had two positives come out of this game,” Poynter said. “We found a guy we think can play keeper for us. He’s been learning how to play on YouTube and he’s really excited about the position. We also had Justin Calhoun play sweeper in the second half and he played really well. That’s the first time he’s played that position. We’re trying to shift people around, find out where people work.”
Berea plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Model.
