H.S. SOCCER: Central tops Berea, 4-0

BEREA — The battle of undefeated teams turned into a lopsided affair, as the Madison Central girls soccer team scored three goals in the first half and rolled to a 4-0 victory against Berea Community on Tuesday night.

Kennedy Harden scored a pair of goals for the Lady Indians, who improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in District 44.

Berea (7-1, 0-1) had scored 47 goals in its first seven games, but was shutout by Central.

“We controlled a lot of the game,” said Central coach Chris Dunham. “We came in really wanting to get ready for West Jessamine and wanted to work on a lot of one and two touches and work on quick possessions. The crosses were awesome and the finishes were good. I’m pretty pleased and confident going into Thursday’s game.”

Central plays at 7:30 p.m. at home Thursday against West Jessamine.

The Lady Colts are one of the premier teams in the area, and beat Central twice last season (6-1, 3-1) on the way to reaching the final four.

Five minutes into the first half, Harden collected the ball about 25 yards out and lofted a long shot over the outstretched hands of the Berea goalkeeper to give the Lady Indians a quick 1-0 lead.

Berea had a chance to tie in the 16th minute when Taylor Powell had a break away one-on-one with Central goalkeeper Sam Shepherd.

Shepherd got in front of the shot, knocking it away for a corner kick.

The Lady Indians cleared the ball away to keep the game 1-0.

Central added a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes.

Once again Harden was on target from long range, blasting a shot from just outside the penalty box for a 2-0 lead.

“The shots were open up top,” Dunham said. “I told them if it’s there take it. I didn’t want them to waste any opportunities.”

With seven minutes left Emily Willoughby took the ball down the left side, crossing to Maryssa Stewart, who one-touched the ball into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The only goal in the second half came with 16:10 to play.

Katelyn Raider Emery dribbled in the middle, passing out to the side to Kelsey Bush, who dribbled to the end line and crossed back to Raider Emery, who scored the goal for a 4-0 lead.

Berea was forced to move one of its top scorers — Sydney Sandefur — to sweeper to offset the Central attack.

“When we have to pull Sydney back it changes the complexion of our offense,” Berea coach Jerry Bingham said. “She did a wonderful job on defense. She cleaned up some balls that I’m sure Central normally scores on. If we get the opportunity to play them again we’re going to have to figure some things out differently on offense. I think we can take a lot from this game and where we need to be at the end of the season.”

Berea plays at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Villa Madonna.
