GOLF: Witt wins county championship

RICHMOND — Heading into the final day of the Madison County Championships, five golfers were tied at the top of the leaderboard.

Stuart Witt, Jay Simmons, Daniel DeLuca, Todd McDaniel and Tyler Cain all shot a -5, 67, Saturday in the opening round at Gibson Bay.

Witt turned in another outstanding round on Sunday and claimed the title.

Witt, a former Madison Central golfer who now plays at EKU, shot a 70 and finished with a -7, 137. Witt edged out Simmons (-6, 138), a Berea native, by one stroke.

McDaniel finished third (140), Kevin Lawson and Travis Feiock tied for fourth (141) and Daniel DeLuca finished sixth (142).

Witt, Lawson and former Central golfer Kyle Congleton also finished tied for the lowest round on Sunday — 70.

Congleton shot a 73 in the first round, but bounced back to finish tied for seventh with Stuart Murphy (-1, 143). Chris Caldwell was ninth (144), Jared Kaiser and Cain finished tied for 10th (+2, 146), Chris Brown was 12th (147), Rick Smith was 13th (149), Kelby Robinson and Seth Profitt tied for 14th (150), Don Hale was 16th (151), Doug Tudor was 17th (152) and John Helton was 18th (153).
