H.S. FOOTBALL: Central freshman fall to Scott County in regional title game

RICHMOND — On Saturday, the Madison Central freshman football team played Scott County at Tates Creek High School in the regional championship game.

The Indians came up short, falling 30-18 to the Cardinals.

On its opening possession of the game, Madison Central drove the ball down the field behind the  running of Korion Crier. They got down to the Scott County 25-yard-line before turning it over on downs.

Scott County took over and finished off the quarter with a touchdown drive to take a 6-0 lead.

A  Madison Central turnover in the second quarter set up the Cardinals’ next score, making it 12-0.

The Indians’ offense continued to move the ball behind pulling guard Cameron Davis and tackles Will Ulmer and Mason Johnson. With just more than two minutes left in the half, Crier scored from eight yards out, making it 12-6.

On  the Cardinals’ next possession, they fumble the ball and the Indians recovered. The officials gave the ball back to Scott County, calling it a dead ball on a blown whistle.

On the next play, Scott County took a sweep 48 yards on third-and-long for a touchdown making it 18-6.

After a short kick and a good return by Dante Altamirano, the Indians tried to go to the air. The Cardinals picked off the pass and returned it for a touchdown making it 24-6 at the half.

The Indians didn’t let the bad breaks get them down as offensive coach Scott Howie and defensive coach Jordan Shanks made their halftime adjustments. In an early-season game against Scott County, the Cardinals took a 24-0 haltime lead but the Indians held them to no points in the second half.

In the third quarter, the Indians rallied behind the running of Crier and Johan Williams. They duo drove the ball down to the 12-yard line, where Crier scored to make it 24-12.

Scott answered back with a passing touchdown for a 30-12 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Indians stopped two Cardinal drives. With 2:30 left in the game and the Indians 92 yards away from the end zone, they found its passing attack. Quarterback Aaron Slone hit wide receivers Cameron Thomas and John Williams to get the ball to the Cardinals 22-yard line.

John Williams caught the ball on a slant route and took it in for the score.
