RICHMOND —
The Lady Colonels (14-8, 8-3 OVC) made the plays they needed down the stretch to pull out a tough 66-64 win over rival Morehead State (8-17, 4-7 OVC) Saturday in Morehead.
EKU lead by as many as 16 points and were up until the 10-minute mark of the second half when the Lady Eagles took their first lead of the game, 41-39.
But a Brittany Coles three pointer started an 8-0 EKU run that ended with a basket by Alex Jones that gave the Lady Colonels a 47-41 lead with 7:20 to go.
Morehead once fought back to take a one-point lead at 50-49 with 4:40 left, but a Raechelle Gray three and a basket and three pointer by Marie Carpenter once again brought the Lady Colonels back to the front at 57-52 with 2:15 left.
After two Morehead free throws, La’Rae Allen drained a three to put EKU up 60-54 with 1:30 to go and the Lady Colonels hit their free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
Allen, who started in place of Jade Barber who left the team earlier in the week, had a career night, finishing with 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Lady Colonels.
Three other Lady Colonels also finished in double figures. Brittany Coles had 16 and needs 50 more points to reach 1,000 points for her career, while Carpenter and Raechelle Gray had 12 points each.
Alex Jones finished with six points, but pulled down 14 rebounds and had three steals. The 14 rebounds gives Jones 946 for her career and leaves her 54 shy of becoming only the second Lady Colonel to reach 1,000 rebounds in their career. Pilar Walker had two points.
The Lady Colonels came out of the gate playing very good defense, holding the Lady Eagles to only four points over the first eight minutes of the game.
On offense, Coles and Allen set the tone early for EKU.
The two combined for 14 points as the Lady Colonels went on an 18-3 run to build a 23-7 lead with five minutes left in the first half.
A Coles three pointer gave EKU its largest lead of the game at 26-10 a minute later before Morehead scored eight of the final 10 points of the half to cut the lead to 28-18 at the half.
The Lady Colonels cooled off to begin the second half and Morehead slowly chipped away at the lead and finally took the lead at 41-39 with 11 minutes to go in the game.
But fueled by the Coles three pointer, the Lady Colonels went on an 8-0 run to recapture the lead and held on down the stretch.
EKU shot 43.9 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from behind the arc.
Even without their leading rebounder in Barber, the Lady Colonels did a great job on the boards, outrebounding the Lady Eagles 36 to 31.
The Lady Colonels return home to play their final three home games of the season, beginning with a 4 p.m. matchup with Jacksonville State on Feb. 16.
