H.S. HOOPS: Sayre knocks off Lady Pirates at All “A” Classic

Berea Community got an outstanding performance from Hannah Haycraft last week in a victory at home over Sayre.

The senior scored 19 points and had 17 rebounds in a 41-37 win last Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, Haycraft was not on the court for the rematch.

Berea got 22 points from Jordan Sandefur but suffered a 42-39 loss to Sayre Tuesday in the opening round of the 11th Region All “A” Classic in Lexington. Victoria Sexton had nine points and six rebounds as the Lady Pirates shot just 23 percent from the field.

Haycraft injured her ankle in a win Friday over Madison Southern.

Gabby Bowie had a triple-double for Sayre — 13 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocks — while Molly Manella had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Berea had a 15-12 lead after the first quarter, but Sayre stormed back and took a 23-21 lead at halftime. The Lady Spartans had a 13-point advantage (37-24) in the second half.

Sayre out-scored Berea 32-6 in the paint and had 17 second-chance points.

The Lady Pirates shot 19 percent in the second half.

Chase Fain added six points and five rebounds for Berea. Alex Horn had two points and Ashley Sizemore had three rebounds and three assists.

Sayre advances to the 11th Region All “A” title game and will take on either Frankfort or Model Laboratory.

Berea is set to return to action Saturday at Whitefield Academy.
