OVC TRACK: Nijhuis, Eason lead Colonels at opening meet of indoor season

RICHMOND — The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team opened the indoor season this weekend by competing at the annual Kentucky Invitational held at E.J. Nutter Fieldhouse.

The two-day meet included teams from schools such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Central Florida, Middle Tennessee State and Marshall.

A pair of sophomores highlighted the weekend for EKU, as Thijs Nijhuis won the men’s mile and Ann Eason was the top collegiate finisher in the women’s 3,000 meters.

Nijhuis won the men’s mile with a time of 4:11.90, defeating his nearest competitor, Louisville’s Andrew Stewart, by just under a second. Junior Wade Meddles (4:13.83), an All-American during the cross country season, finished fourth, while sophomore Sean Vandermosten  (4:14.37) took fifth in the field of 20 runners.

Eason, the defending Ohio Valley Conference champion in the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters, ran a personal-best time of 9:39.29 in the 3,000 meters, finishing second in the field of 27 runners and losing only to Samantha Hamilton, an unattached runner.

Other notable performances over the weekend included freshman Mads Taersboel finishing fourth in the men’s 3,000 meters with a time of 8:24.57 and sophomores Tanner Kendall and Zach Hill finishing fourth and sixth in the men’s high jumps with indoor personal-best  leaps of 6-6.75 and 6-4.75, respectively.

The EKU track and field team returns to action the weekend of Jan. 25 and 26 at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, which is also held at Nutter Fieldhouse.
