GEORGETOWN —
With 3:27 left in the first quarter, the Lady Indians were facing a 14-4 deficit Monday against 11th Region rival Scott County.
Madison Central coach Robbie Cooksey stood on the sidelines, arms folded, debating whether to call a timeout.
“In that situation, sure you can call a timeout,” Cooksey said. “But we’ve got experience, three seniors and two juniors. They’ve played with each other. There isn’t much you can say to them. They know what’s going on. They know how to fix it.”
And fix it Madison Central did.
The No. 6 Lady Indians went on a 12-2 run to take the lead and eventually cruised to a 70-53 victory over the No. 10 Lady Cardinals on Monday.
“Anytime you can come over here and get a win, its a good win,” Cooksey said. “They always play really, really good basketball. They have the tradition, the coaching, things like that. It’s a good win for us.”
In the beginning it looked like anything but a win for Madison Central.
Scott County’s Tereka Guyn scored six of her team’s first 14 points, all on offensive rebounds and putbacks, while Madison Central missed its first four shots.
“It’s their home court and they came out with a lot of intensity and we didn’t match it,” Cooksey said. “But finally we got a few baskets and got it going.”
Yes, they did.
With 1:08 left in the first, Ashton Feldhaus sank a three-pointer to tie the game at 14-14.
Moments later, Larryn Brooks got a steal and a layup that gave Madison Central its first lead of the game, 18-16.
The Lady Indians never trailed again.
Brooks led Central, scoring a team-high 22 points, while dishing out seven assists and coming up with six steals.
“I think she’s one of the top five kids in the state,” Cooksey said of his senior floor leader, an Indiana University commit. “She’s a great weapon to have for us.”
Brooks made her presence on the court known in the early moments of the third quarter with her team leading 42-29.
She pick-pocketed a Lady Card, took off to the basket and dished off to a trailing Feldhaus for a bucket. Then on back-to-back plays, she caught the outlet pass and went coast to coast for easy layups and a 48-31 lead.
Scott County cut the lead to single digits (53-44) late in the fourth on a three-pointer by Bailey Hawkins, but Shadae Bosley scored a basket, Bailey O’Bryan scored another and Feldhaus hit a runner in the lane to push the score back to 59-44.
Then a three by Heather Hinkle with 2:46 to go sent Scott County scrambling back on its heels.
The Lady Indians lead by as much as 20 points (70-50) before Scott County hit a three in the final 10 seconds.
Fedlhaus recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while O’Bryan chipped in 15 points. Hinkle knocked down three three-pointers for nine points.
Defensively, Madison Central held Scott County to 22-of-75 (29.3 percent) from the floor and forced 15 turnovers.
Scott County was led by Guyn, who scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.
About the only things Cooksey could complain about was his team’s start to the game.
“We need to do a better job of not getting down early,” Cooksey said. “There’s no reason for us to come in and get down 14-4. We’ve got to do a better job with that.”
Madison Central returns to action on Jan. 16, when it travels to take on Ballard High School.
