Tuesday Doubles No-Tap

Nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike in no-tap leagues. Thus, scores are higher than in regular leagues.

There were two more no-tap 300 games rolled in this league last week. Jeff Sadler and Matt Joyce each bowled a "perfect" game. Joyce reached this level for the third consecutive week.

Jeff Napier rolled the next-best game at 296, while the top series scores were 844 by Joyce and 796 by Sadler.

Bowling camps

The summer bowling camps continue this week and next at Galaxy

The camp for youth aged 10-14 starts today and runs through Thursday. A camp for those aged 15 and over runs from June 25 through 28.

Each camp includes four hours of instruction from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Lunch is provided.

The cost for the week is $50 per child. Call 624-4444 to register for one of these camps.

Singles tournament Sunday

There will be handicapped singles tournament at Galaxy at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The handicap used will be 90 percent of the difference between the bowler's 2011-12 average and 220. The entry fee is $30.

After bowling four games across four pairs of lanes, the top five will advance to a step-ladder final.

Cash prizes will be awarded.

Bluegrass Games underway

The 2012 Bluegrass State Games were opened with the lighting of the Games' torch on June 10 by Kentucky Secretary of State Alice Lundergan Grimes and Jared Fogle.

Fogle is a spokesman for Subway restaurants which is a major sponsor of this year's games.

Track and field events were held last weekend and will be followed by competition in 30 other sports between now and the first weekend in August.

Bowling is scheduled for July 21 and 22. There will be singles and doubles competition for six age groups ranging from eight years old and younger to 55 and over.

The entry fee is $25 for one event or $35 for two events. Go to www.bgsg.org for details and entry forms.

Incidentally, I am the bowler who appears briefly in the ads for the Bluegrass Games which are shown occasionally on the Lexington TV stations.

My time on screen in the 15-second version is very brief and easily missed, but the 30-second version does include my name, age and hometown.

I accepted an invitation to participate in making these commercials as a way of promoting bowling in the Bluegrass Games. As regular readers of this column know, I played a role in getting bowling returned to the BGSG after it had been dropped because of a low number of participants.

I urge all local bowlers to register for these games so bowling will continue to be a vital part of the BGSG. I am sure all those who participate will have an enjoyable experience.
