BEREA —
The Lady Eagles were determined to bounce back from a pair of tough losses.
Madison Southern snapped a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-9) win over Berea Monday at home. The win wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the district tournament and gave the Lady Eagles a season sweep of their cross-town rivals.
“We had been playing really well for about the last month, then we laid an egg over at Central the other night,” Southern coach Jeremy Grant said. “We’ve had a good bounce back. I thought we played well over at Western Hills the other night and I think tonight they wanted to show that we are not going to roll over.”
Southern had won five of six matches heading into last Tuesday’s district showdown with Central in Richmond. The Lady Eagles suffered a 3-0 loss, then fell at Western Hills, 3-0, on Thursday,
Southern (10-10) had not lost back-to-back games in more than a month.
Against Berea (5-13), the Lady Eagles were in control for most of the match, with the expect of the second set.
Southern took a quick 3-0 lead, but Berea rallied and took a 10-7 lead on the strong serving of Hannah Haycraft and a kill by Hannah Williams.
Berea took an 18-17 lead on an ace by Virginia Deaver, but the serving of Raven Shearer put Southern back in front. The senior setter had an ace and service winner as the Lady Eagles went up 22-19.
A kill by Haycraft got the Lady Pirates back within two points before errors allowed Southern to close out the set.
The third set was tight in the opening minutes.
Jackie Shepherd had a kill and an ace as the Lady Eagles took a 6-3 lead. Kenoa Gallion connected on 10-straight serves, while Lauren Taylor and Briana Saylor had kills as Southern opened up a 20-6 lead.
Kelsey Choate had a kill late as the Lady Eagles wrapped up the win.
“Lauren Taylor hit the ball really well, especially in the third set,” Grant said. “Raven Shearer and Kenoa Gallion on the right side did a great job on defense. They did a great job communicating.”
Southern is set to return to action today at Bourbon County.
Madison Central 3, Montgomery County 0
The Lady Indians picked up their fifth-straight win Monday, beating Montgomery County in Richmond.
Madison Central (11-14) won by scores of 25-14, 25-22, 25-18.
The Lady Indians are set to return to action today at Lincoln County.
