H.S. FOOTBALL: Harris leads Eagles to district road victory

SOMERSET — Madison Southern sophomore running back Damien Harris rushed 14 times for 256 yards and had five touchdowns and the Eagles opened district with a big road win, beating defending district champion Southwestern, 41-12.

Harris scampered down the sideline for a 63-yard touchdown run on the opening kickoff giving the Eagles an early 6-0 lead.

Southwestern scored on its opening drive.

Austin Smiddy faked out the Eagle defense on a quarterback keeper and ran in from eight yards out for a touchdown, tying the game up at 6-6 with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

Southern quarterback Adam Simpson hooked up with John Williams on an 80-yard touchdown pass with 5:52 left in the first quarter.

Harris scored on runs of 58 and 68 yards to give the Eagles a 27-6 lead after one quarter.

Southwestern scored on the final play of the first half, as junior Devon Baker took a wide receiver reverse to the house from nine yards out for a touchdown.

The 2-point try failed, as Southern led 27-12 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter.

Harris scored twice in the fourth quarter, on runs of 60 and 20 yards.

Southern finished with 395 total yards, with 294 coming on the ground and 101 through the air. Simpson was 2-for-5 for 101 yards.

Williams had two catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Southwestern had 123 rushing yards and 47 passing yards for a combined total of 170 yards. Smiddy went 5-for-12 for 47 yards. The Warriors’ leading receiver was sophomore Branson Patterson, who caught three passes for 29 yards. Logan Campisano had a team-high 76 rushing yards in the loss.

Southern, which went 2-8 last year and 1-4 in district, is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play.

It was Southwestern’s first home loss since Oct. 15, 2010.

Southern returns to district play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lincoln County.
