RICHMOND — A full field of 124 golfers competed in the Madison Country Club’s annual Labor Day Tournament.

This four-day event is the oldest golf tournament in the county and has been won by PGA major champions Gay Brewer and Bobby Nichols.

It all started Friday afternoon with the popular shootout of 18 top players competing for a nice jackpot. They were accompanied by a large vocal motorized gallery rooting for their favorite.

After the smoke cleared and some spectacular shots and chip offs, the last man standing was Randy Jewell. Jim Kiser was second and Robbie Wiseman was third.

At the end of three more days of fun and action packed golf, the winners picked up some very nice rewards for their endeavors.

The winners were — Championship Flight: First place — Harold Wallace, 205; second place — Ron Layman, 212; third place — Don Pollard, 216 and fourth place — Aaron Morrison, 216, losing the scorecard match.

Championship Consolation: First place — Shawn Tipton and Izzy Grayson split the pot with 232. Third place was Chris Perry, 234; and fourth place was Charlie Cornette, 235.

First Flight: First place — Josh Dobson and Butch Coleman split the pot with 240; Third place — Luke Wright, 241 and fourth place — Wade Adams, 242.

First Flight Consolation: First place — Pat Smith and second place — Matt Brown.

These flights were medal play.

The following flights were all match play.

Second Flight: First place — Sonny Lawson; second place — Robbie Robertson. Second Flight Consolation: First place — Chad Davis; second place — Winfred Hughes.

Third Flight: First place — Dave Holcomb; second place — Russ Tracy. Third Flight Consolation: First place — Reagan Taylor; second place — Dan Reynolds.

Fourth Flight: First place — Calvin Tolar; second place — Buddy Stone. Fourth Flight Consolation: First place — Skip East, second place — Kent Hieronymus.

Fifth Flight: First, place — Earl Estes; second place — Joe Robertson. Fifth Flight Consolation: First place — Larry Johnson and second place — Richie Arthur.

It was another successful tournament at the old fun club. On Saturday night there was a delicious dinner followed by a dance.

The Klassic Tymes had the crowd rocking with their wonderful band.

For three days pretty Megan Tracy, Amanda Broaddus and PGM student Todd Broaddus served hot-off-the-grill tenderloin, hamburgers and hot dogs to the hungry golfers. Michael and Verna Freer catered the delicious dinners on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Chairman Hubert Broaddus burned his candle at both ends for four days to see that everything was hitting on four cylinders. He had a lot of capable help from manager Ron Francis and volunteers Missy Smith, Jan Barnes, Wendy Winters, Pat Brandenburg, Carolyn Jones, Lorna Tribble, George Powell, George Stone, Russ Tracy, Doug Tudor, Joyce Kearns, Kenny Wilson, and auctioneer Jack Marcum.

It was a great team effort from a lot of wonderful people. Hats off to all of you good folks on a job well done.

Mahalo!
