H.S. VOLLEYBALL: Dunbar rolls past Southern

BEREA — The Lady Eagles knew the challenge they were set to face in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament.

So, they went into a match-up with No. 9 Dunbar with a serious, yet light-hearted attitude.

“We were just like, ‘Lets go have fun,” Madison Southern coach Jeremy Grant said. “‘We are at home and everyone’s mom and dad is going to get to watch. Let’s just have fun.’”

Despite the home-court advantage, the Lady Eagles couldn’t slow down  Dunbar. The Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-5, 25-7) win at Madison Southern High School.

With its 30th win of the season, Dunbar moves on to the semifinals to take on Henry Clay Wednesday in Berea.

Southern finishes the season with a 14-17 record. The 14 wins are the third-most in school history.

“I think it was a good experience, especially for our younger girls,” Grant said. “They got to go in there and see that speed.”

The Lady Eagles took a brief lead in the opening set, 1-0, then Dunbar scored 18 straight points.

In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs jumped on top 16-3 were in control the rest of the way.

The third set was more of a battle, at least early on.

Dunbar went up 4-0, then Southern scored three-straight points behind the solid serving of Lauren Taylor and a kill by Jackie Shepherd.

The Lady Eagles trailed just 11-7 mid-way through the set, but Dunbar scored the final 14 points of the match to wrap up the victory.

“Our girls went out there and tried,” Grant said. “They didn’t just stop. They tried to get in front of balls.”

The loss marked the final game for seven Southern seniors — Raven Shearer, Paige King, Kelsey Choate, Shepherd, Brooke Kidd, Brianna Saylor and Lauren Taylor.
