RICHMOND —
Central put together a dominant defensive performance in the first half of Tuesday’s 44th district tournament match-up with Berea.
The defense was so good that Berea managed just two baskets and five total points through the first two quarters.
Berea never recovered and Central rolled to a 79-30 victory at McBrayer Arena.
Central (29-1) scored the game’s first five points and led 11-2 after one quarter.
Berea (15-16) managed just five shot attempts in the first quarter and was two-of-13 in the first half as Central opened a 35-5 halftime lead.
The Pirates had more turnovers (14) than shot attempts in the first half, while Central had eight steals.
“That first game of district is always a little scary. There seems like there are more upsets in the first round than in any other round in tournament play,” Central coach Allen Feldhaus said. “I thought our guys were really focused mentally and did what they were supposed to do.”
Leading 5-2, Central went on a 9-0 run (behind three points from Daniel Parke and two by Hunter Allen, Ken-Jah Bosley and Quan Taylor) to go up 14-2.
After Berea cut the lead to 14-4, Central put the game out of reach with a 19-0 run, taking a 31-4 lead late in the first half.
Parke drove the lane, dishing off to Allen for a basket.
Hunter Stocker hit a jumper, Allen nailed a three-pointer and John O’Bryan grabbed a rebound, passing to Dominique Hawkins, who ran the fast break, finishing the play with a short jumper for a 23-4 lead.
Bosley faked a three and sent a bullet pass in the lane to Taylor for two points.
Bosley scored four points on similar plays — grabbing rebounds and racing coast-to-coast for baskets —to make it 29-4
Hawkins sank a jumper, then found O’Bryan on the fast break for an easy score and a 33-4 lead.
The Indians led by 30 points at halftime.
In the first half Central was 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the field, while Berea shot 15.4 percent.
Central’s full-court pressure trapping defense was the difference.
“We were just quicker than they were and I think Berea got tired against the pressure,” Feldhaus said. “When you’re playing that extra 10 feet, 94 opposed to 84, your quickness really stands out.”
The Pirates were able to get the offense going in the second half, but Central still outscored Berea 21-15 in the third quarter and 23-10 in the fourth quarter.
Overall, Central shot 59.3 percent, while Berea shot 30.8 percent.
Central had 33 rebounds to 20 for Berea.
The Indians had 13 steals.
Hawkins led Central with 16 points in only 14 minutes of action.
Allen had nine points and five rebounds and Taylor added nine points.
Stocker had eight points, Parke had seven, Bosley, O’Bryan and Demarcus George had six points, Coty Alexander scored four, Kyle Congleton and George Walker had three and Sam Jones scored two.
Barry Scudder-Davis led Berea with 16 points.
Ben Miller had five, Eli Woodie four, Daniel Hubbard three and Trey Terrill two.
Central advances to Friday’s district championship game against the winner of tonight’s game between Madison Southern and Model.
Friday’s tip-off is 8:15 p.m.
