Fight stops Madison Southern/West Jessamine soccer game

RICHMOND — The Madison Southern boys soccer team’s home opener Thursday night against West Jessamine was stopped midway through the second half when punches were thrown.

There was no score when the game was stopped.

According to officials, Southern’s Drew Taylor committed a hard foul against a West Jessamine player.

During an ensuing melee, Drew Taylor’s brother, Marlin Taylor, threw two punches against separate West Jessamine players.

Officials said that the Taylors, who are African-American, claimed that West Jessamine players used a racial slur.

None of the three officials heard West Jessamine players use the slur, they said.

While the lead official was trying to escort Marlin Taylor off the field, he said that Southern’s Lucas Reynolds shoved him.

The official then grabbed Reynolds and tried to get him off the field, which led to a woman entering the field and screaming obscenities at the official for putting his hands on a minor.

Both teams were told to leave the field while officials tried to sort out what had happened.

After a discussion Marlin Taylor and Reynolds were issued red cards.

None of the players from West Jessamine were carded.

The game was being filmed and the tape will be sent to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, which will review the footage and make any disciplinary decisions.

Southern coach James Ray refused to comment about any specifics of the incident.

“We were starting to play better in the second half,” Ray said. “Obviously we had an incident that we hope we can learn from.”

Southern (0-1) is scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. at home on Saturday against Bourbon County.
