H.S. SOCCER: Southern falls to Western HIlls, 4-3

RICHMOND — A couple of quick goals put Madison Southern in an early hole against one of the top-ranked teams in the state.

Still, the Eagles fought back.

Southern (8-4) battled back to tie the game at halftime, but two second-half goals lifted No. 10 Western Hills (12-0-1) to a 4-3 win Thursday at the Berea Cup.

“The thing I really liked was that our guys were disappointed,” Southern coach James Ray said. “They weren’t satisfied to just play with a good team. Hopefully, this is something we can build on.”

The loss snaps Southern’s seven-game winning streak.

During that winning streak, the Eagles allowed only two goals and had six shutouts.

Western Hills moves on the Berea Cup title game on Saturday and will face West Jessamine.

Alex Sipple scored twice and Lucas Reynolds had the other goal for Southern.

Western Hills took a 3-2 lead early in the second half, then pushed its lead back to two goals on a deflected shot moments later.

Southern is set to return to action Thursday at South Laurel.

Berea falls to Estill County

The Pirates wrapped up play in the Berea Cup with a 9-2 loss to Estill County on Thursday.

Derick Castle and Neil Claytor had goals as Berea Community snapped a four-game goal-less streak.

The Pirates (2-10) led twice in the first half, 1-0 and 2-1, but the Engineers took control. The Pirates were playing without sweeper Justin Calhoun, who broke his ankle in a loss Wednesday to Somerset.

Berea will take on Central Tuesday.

Lady Pirates roll on road

Taylor Powell had four goals and an assist as the Berea Community girls soccer team rolled to a 9-0 win over Bell County Thursday in Middlesboro.

With the win, the Lady Pirates improve their record to 9-1-1 on the season.

Sydney Sandefur and Tonya Renzenbrink also had first-half goals, while Sarah Fossett, Alexis Lagrange and Abi Woodie added second-half goals.

Sandefur scored just 1:45 into the game, then Powell scored four times in a five-minute stretch.

Renzenbrink had an assist, as did Emma Patterson and Tyger Williams. Junior Holly Musick earned the shutout in goal.

Berea is set to return to action Saturday at Villa Madonna.
