H.S. SOCCER: Stewart scores as Madison Central blanks Lafayette, 1-0

RICHMOND — The Lady Indians went on the road Wednesday and posted another shutout against a tough 11th Region opponent.

Junior striker Maryssa Stewart scored in the 3rd minute and Madison Central’s defense made the score hold up during a 1-0 win over Lafayette (7-5) in Lexington.

“The defense played really well,” Central coach Chris Dunham said. “We packed it in and forced them out wide.”

Central (10-2-1) played Franklin County to a 0-0 tie on Monday in Frankfort. The game against Lafayette was another defensive battle.

Stewart’s goal came off a corner. The ball rattled around the front of the net for a moment after the kick and eventually the junior got her foot on the ball and found the back of the net.

“It was a midfield back-and-forth battle the whole game,” Dunham said.

Sam Shepherd earned the shutout in net.

So far this season, Central is 4-0-1 against 11th Region competition.

The Lady Indians are set to return to action against district rival Madison Southern at 4 p.m. Saturday in Richmond.

Somerset 2, Berea 0

The Pirates’ offensive struggles continued Wednesday against Somerset at the Berea Cup.

Berea Community was shutout for the fourth-straight game, suffering a 2-0 loss. The loss was the sixth-straight for the Pirates (2-7).

Berea also lost Justin Calhoun for probably the rest of the season after the junior broke his ankle.

The Pirates wrap up play in the Berea Cup at 6 p.m. today at home against Estill County.

Berea Cup update

After two lopsided victories, Madison Southern is in position to earn a spot in the championship game of the Berea Cup.

The Eagles (8-3) face No. 10 Western Hills at 6 p.m. today at Madison Southern. The winner moves on to the title game to play either Simon Kenton or West Jessamine.

Southern defeated Berea 7-0 Monday, then defeated Somerset, 7-2, on Tuesday. The Eagles have won seven straight games and have allowed only two goals during that stretch.

Lady Patriots fall

The Model Laboratory girls soccer team slipped to 0-10 on the season with a 10-0 loss to East Jessamine Wednesday in Richmond.

The Patriots are set to return to action Monday at North Laurel.
