Richmond American improves to 3-0 at state tournament
RICHMOND — The Richmond American All-Stars are one step closer to a state title.
Campbellsville mounted a late rally, but Richmond American held on for a 6-4 win Monday in the 9-10 year-old Kentucky State Little League Tournament at Lake Reba. With the win, the All-Stars completed the pool portion of the event with a perfect 3-0 record.
Richmond, the top seed from Pool A, will take on East Daviess County in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. on Owen Field.
The other semifinal will feature South Oldham and Fleming-Neon (6 p.m.). The title game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Richmond took a 6-2 lead into the sixth inning, but Campbellsville mounted one last threat. A pair of singles and an error allowed two runs to score. Campbellsville then loaded the bases before Alex Mayes came on in relief and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead in the third, but Richmond responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mayes reached on an infield single, then Jared Grant ripped an RBI double. McKinley Sewell then added an RBI double of his own to tie the score.
Richmond took the lead in the fourth when first baseman Bryar Rose delivered a two-out, two-run double to right field.
Richmond added two more runs in the fifth. Adam Ritchey had a run-scoring single and Ryan Gordon followed with an RBI double.
Brian Turner started and went 5 1/3 innings. Grant and Mayes both took the mound in the sixth.
Mayes had three hits and Turner also had a hit.
