STATE AM: Colonel golfers still in the hunt

RICHMOND — Two EKU golfers are still in contention for the title after the second round of the 2012 Kentucky State Amateur Championship.

Taylor Riggs, a sophomore at EKU, is tied for third place, while former Colonel Brian Fister is tied for eighth place.

The three-day tournament is being held at the Cardinal Club in Simp-sonville.

Patr-ick New-comb of Benton is in the lead with a two-round total of 135. Tyler McDa-niel is in second place with a total of 137.

Riggs, a native of LaGrange, shot a 68 on Tuesday, but slipped out of a share of the lead after shooting a 71 on Wednesday.

Fister, a Lexington native, shot a 74 on Tuesday, but rebounded with a 68 in the second round.

Eight players with connections to the EKU golf program are competing in the event.

Stuart Witt, a Richmond native and junior at EKU, shot a 72 in the second round and is tied for 30th.

EKU senior Danny Bishop has a two-round total of 148 and is tied for 42nd.

Several other EKU players missed the cut, which was +9, 151.

Andrew Yeast, an EKU senior from Harrodsburg, tied for 77th with a two-round total of 153.

Garrett Hinton, an EKU junior from Elizabethtown, tied for 87th with a two-round total of 154.

Ben Purchell, a sophomore at EKU, shot a 160, and future Colonel Kyle Congleton shot a two-round total of 161.

Richmond’s Chris Hatfield shot a 77 on Wednesday, but his two-round total of 159 wasn’t enough to make the cut.
