BEREA —
Madison Southern struck first in overtime, but a gamble by Wayne County paid off and the Cardinals beat the Eagles 22-21 Friday night.
The Eagles had the ball first in overtime.
On the second play, sophomore running back Damien Harris ran untouched up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown.
Alex Sipple’s extra point made it 21-14.
Wayne County needed two plays to score.
Quarterback Tyler Guffey connected with Dagan Shelton on a 10-yard pass to cut the lead to 21-20.
The Cardinals decided to go for the 2-point conversion.
Guffey found James Barnes open in the corner to give Wayne County the victory.
“They played better than us and won the game,” Southern coach Jon Clark said. “We made more mistakes than they made. We knew coming into the season we were going to have to learn to win. We’re going to have to learn to win close games. This is a step towards winning those close games.”
Southern (1-2) took a 7-0 lead early in the game.
On the third play from scrimmage, Harris hit the left corner and raced 79 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Wayne County (4-0) scored twice in the second quarter, going up 14-7 at halftime.
Southern wasted little time tying the game in the second half.
The Eagles forced a punt and John Williams returned the ball to the 48-yard line.
On Southern’s first play, Harris took off for a 52-yard rushing touchdown.
Mid-way through the third quarter, Wayne County was driving, but Williams intercepted the ball at his own 15-yard line and returned it to the 34-yard line.
The Eagles looked like they were going to take the lead when Harris rushed 33 yards for a touchdown, but the play was called back because of a penalty.
Southern ended up turning the ball over on downs at the Wayne County 15-yard line.
The Eagles’ defense continued to play strong.
Adam Simpson batted away a pass attempt to end one Wayne County drive.
Late in the game, Wayne County was driving for the winning score, but an offensive pass interference call pushed the Cardinals back and they were forced to punt.
Southern had one last chance to win the game in regulation, after getting the ball at their own 23-yard line with 47.8 second remaining.
Simpson ran the ball for two yards, before fumbling.
Buddy Harrison made a heads up play, picking up the ball and advancing it another 11 yards to the 36-yard line.
Southern, though, was stuck at the 36 as time ran out, forcing overtime.
“They have a physical downhill defense, they bring a lot of pressure,” Clark said of Wayne County. “We didn’t pick everything up, but we’ve got to sustain drives better. The defense played a great game. Offensively we have to be more consistent.”
For the game, Harris rushed 18 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
He also threw a pass for 33 yards and had a 17-yard reception.
Spencer Stone, who caught the pass from Harris, had three receptions for 43 yards.
The Eagles had 234 yards on the ground and 60 through the air.
Southern plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Powell County.
