H.S. FOOTBALL: Pirates looking to bounce back

BEREA — Last year when the Berea Community football team play host to Nicholas County, it wasn’t a pleasant evening for the Pirates.

Berea allowed a season-high 55 points and fell to the Bluejackets 55-8.

The Pirates (1-2) are looking to return the favor when they travel to Nicholas County (2-1) tonight for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

It will be Berea’s third straight game away from home.

After opening the season with a 38-0 victory at home against Trimble County, the Pirates have lost two straight, falling to Gallatin County (40-6) and Bethlehem (30-18).

In both losses the Pirates hurt themselves with costly mistakes.

Berea trailed Gallatin County 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, before a turnover and a defensive breakdown allowed the Wildcats to score two late touchdowns to take an 18-0 lead at halftime.

Gallatin County scored on its first three possessions of the second half, turning the game into a rout.

Against Bethlehem the Pirates fell behind 12-0, then pulled within 12-6 and 24-18, but couldn’t get the big play to turn things around and take the lead.

Nicholas County opened the season with a 32-16 victory against Lewis County, then lost to Fleming County (53-14) before beating West Carter (33-22) last week in the Bluejackets’ home opener.

In last year’s game, Nicholas County running back Caleb Pope (14 rushes, 188 yards, two touchdowns) and quarterback Dalton Pope (7-for-12 for 131 yards and four touchdowns) burned the Pirates.

Those players are gone this season.

Instead, Berea will have to contend with running back Austin Allison (42 rushes, 363 yards, six touchdowns) and the quarterback tandem of Ben Duncan (7-for-13, 201 yards, four touchdowns) and J.D. Wagoner (4-for-11, 132 yards, one touchdown).

Wagoner is more of the running quarterback, having gained 100 yards on 22 carries.

In the season opener against Trimble County, Berea running back Zach Cunningham rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns.

Devin Hester (88 yards) and Hunter Wilson (69) also had rushing touchdowns.

The rushing attack was shut down against Gallatin County, as the Pirates managed just 55 yards on the ground.

Down big in the second half, Berea was forced to pass.

Freshman quarterback Deondre Tate responded by throwing for 122 yards and his first touchdown, a 3-yard pass to Wilson.

Against Bethlehem, Cunningham rushed for two touchdowns and Wilson scored a touchdown.

Do you support the Richmond City Commission’s proposal to fund three additional firefighters by taking $100,000 originally planned as capital outlay for city parks and another $110,000 by not restoring the uniform allowance for police officers and firefighters?

Yes. The firefighting force was stretched dangerously thin.
Yes. But it should not have been done by cutting the uniform allowance.
Yes. But it should not have been done by cutting capital outlay for parks.
Yes. But I oppose cutting both the uniform allowance and the parks capital outlay.
No. The firefighting force was adequate and police officers and firefighters deserve a uniform allowance and parks need to be expanded/improved.
