RICHMOND — Berea emergency officials are urging extreme caution for all motorists traveling in and around Berea because of flash flooding caused by torrential rainfall Tuesday afternoon.

According to police radio reports, Old US 25 was blocked by high, swift water over the roadway. Gabbardtown Road also was reported to be flooded. Several cars were stranded due to high water, and many roadways in the city of Berea, or the surrounding areas were either completely blocked or dangerous. Motorists should not drive through any flooded roadways. Water can appear shallow, but a few inches is enough to knock a car from a roadway.

At 4:30 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning until 7:15 for Southern Madison County because an additional one inch of rain was expected. The warning stated that Brushy Fork Creek in Berea was likely to flood.

Extreme caution should be used when travelling around the southern end of the county, and travel should be restricted while the warning is in place. Motorists are advised not to travel if at all possible and avoid driving through any flooded roadway.
