Police arrest woman who reported robbery

By Tim Mandell

A Brassfield Road woman who reported an armed robbery was charged Tuesday with falsely reporting an incident after police say an investigation revealed that the robbery did not occur.

At approximately 5:21 p.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to Redi Mart, 920 Red House Road, to investigate a reported armed robbery in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers met with Jessica R. Reece, 20, who reported that she was at the Redi Mart when a female approached her, pointed a firearm at her and demanded money, said Chief Larry Brock of the Richmond Police Department. Reece reported that the female suspect took $125 from her wallet and fled in a white Toyota Camry.

Upon investigation, police determined that no such robbery occurred, Brock said. It was determined that a friend of Reece’s had taken some money from her purse and Reece wanted to get her money back and felt that reporting the incident as a robbery would result in police response and a quicker return of her money, Brock said.

Reece was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.

Stolen property arrest

Ronald R. Penman, 18, of Logan Avenue, was arrested for theft on Tuesday after he was allegedly observed removing items from a parked vehicle in the 1000 block of Merrick Drive.

According to police, at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Tuesday, a resident reported observing two male suspects entering parked vehicles in the area. When Officer Kyle Hurt arrived in the area to investigate, he observed the two male suspects peering in the kitchen window of a nearby apartment. Hurt was able to detain Penman, but the other male suspect fled on foot and could not be located.

One of the vehicle owners was contacted and reported that a bottle of cologne, some loose change, two guitar picks, a backpack and a pair of Jordan basketball shoes were missing from his vehicle. A search of Penman’s person produced the cologne and guitar picks. The backpack was found in the bed of a nearby pickup truck. The shoes could not be located.

Penman was charged with theft by unlawful taking under $500, alcohol intoxication and giving officer false name or address after he initially identified himself as someone else.

Penman was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
