BEREA —
U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Sixth District, visited the Veterans Affairs clinic in Berea on Tuesday morning for National Salute to Veteran Patients Week.
The clinic, which opened three years ago last month, has grown “very, very fast,” said Susan Daugherty, its nurse manager.
The community-based clinic manages the care of about 5,000 patients, she told Chandler. That is in addition to walk-in patients.
For patients who live along the Interstate 75 corridor, the clinic is much more convenient than VA facilities in Lexington. Not only is it nearer, the Berea clinic is a short distance from Exit 77 off the interstate and easier to reach than a facility in a more urban area.
The clinic’s draw was evident Tuesday as Chandler greeted veterans in the waiting room from Rockcastle, Garrard, Knox and Harlan counties.
The Berea clinic has three full-time physicians on staff, and patients can speak with specialists in Lexington via video conference, Daugherty said. In some cases, visual examinations can even be performed via video, she said.
For veterans in need of nursing or laboratory services, the clinic has reduced travel time by about two hours when the nearest VA facility is in Lexington.
Also on Tuesday, Chandler visited VA medical facilities on Leestown Road in Lexington and in Wilmore.
Although the veterans Chandler spoke with in Berea on Tuesday were older, a new waive of younger veterans with medical needs has been created by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the congressman said.
