Police seek man who attempted to rob pet store

RICHMOND — Police are looking for a suspect in an attempted robbery that occurred Tuesday, Aug. 31 at the Animal House on S. Killarney Lane.

Employees reported to police at 8 p.m. that a black male armed with a knife entered the pet store and demanded money.

“Upon seeing the knife, employees fled to the rear of the store,” said Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock. “The suspect then fled empty-handed out the front door.”

The suspect was described as being short in stature with a mask covering the lower portion of his face. He reportedly was wearing a light blue athletic-style shirt and dark, shiny pants.

In other crimes:

• Police arrested Scott A. VanWinkle, 34, and Stacey L. Teater, 28, both of McKee on Tuesday, Aug. 31, on drug charges after VanWinkle refused to leave the grounds of Blue Grass Plating on N. Estill Avenue.

At 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a complaint that VanWinkle was on the property and would not leave. When officers arrived, they encountered VanWinkle and Teater.  

VanWinkle attempted to conceal three clonazepam (prescription medication) upon being contacted and was arrested, according to Brock. Further investigation determined that Teater had transferred the pills to VanWinkle. She was taken into custody and found to be in possession of three Flexeril pills.  

Both were charged with third-degree possession of a controlled substance. VanWinkle was charged with public intoxication and Teater was charged with third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

They were lodged in the Madison County Detention Center on a $2,500 unsecured bond. VanWinkle has bonded out, but Teater remains in jail as of Thursday afternoon, according to detention center personnel.

• The owner of M&M Drugs on Big Hill Avenue reported Tuesday that someone had attempted to enter the business during the overnight hours. The owner discovered a ceiling tile out of place and further investigation revealed that a hole had been cut in the roof of the building. No items were reported missing from the store.

• A complainant reported Saturday that his vehicle had been unlawfully entered during the early evening hours while parked near the ball fields at the main entrance to the Lake Reba area. Entry was gained via a partially rolled-down window, according to police reports.

The items stolen included a Stihl chainsaw, model 009 with a 12” bar; an Echo chainsaw, model 540, with a 20” bar; and a brown leather wallet containing numerous credit cards and personal identification documents. The estimated loss is $635.    

• A resident in the Derby Chase subdivision reported Wednesday, Aug. 25 that four drainage grates owned by Richmond Public Works had been stolen from streets.

The resident reported seeing a vehicle in the area with a tall white male picking up items the previous evening, but did not realize he was stealing the grates until the following morning, police said. The estimated value of the grates is $600.

• A complainant reported Tuesday, Aug. 24 that his workshop in the 400 block of Big Hill Avenue had been broken into during the overnight hours and two Paslode nail guns and a 12-inch Dewalt chop saw had been stolen. The estimated loss is $1,300.
