RICHMOND —
An Evansdale Avenue resident has been accused of stealing about $2,662 worth of items from a woman’s apartment, said Larry Brock, Richmond police chief.
The woman told police someone had entered her apartment during the overnight hours of Saturday. Entry was gained through an unlocked window, Brock said.
A Sanyo 50-inch flat screen television was taken from the household, as well as a Sanyo 26-inch flat screen TV, a Hewlett-Packard computer with monitor, a large wall picture of flowers, a Sony DVD player, an unknown brand DVD player, a silver Pentax camera, about $15 in change, a pair of white Nike shoes with black and pink checks, a bag of recently purchased clothing from Belk’s, a Time Warner cable modem, a Nintendo DS gaming system, a Tinkerbell jewelry box containing costume jewelry and an unknown brand pink MP3 player.
“Follow-up investigation conducted by Officer Daniel Ellis identified Bobby D. Samples, age 23, of Evansdale Avenue as a suspect after he was reportedly observed in possession of one of the stolen televisions on the night of the burglary,” Brock said.
Samples was arrested after police located him in the 400 block of Francis Street on Sunday. He was arrested on a bench warrant for non-payment of fines.
He was transported to the police department, interviewed and charged with second-degree burglary in connection with the break-in.
Samples is being held in the Madison County Detention Center on a $5,988 bond, which includes the unpaid fines.
As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, none of the property reported stolen had been recovered by police, Brock said.
If convicted, Samples faces up to 10 years in prison.
Other crimes
• A woman told police Sunday that her blue Palm Centro cellphone valued at $300 had been stolen that afternoon from Miller’s Landing Laundromat in the 900 block of Red House Road.
• A resident of an apartment in the 900 block of Villa Drive told police that sometime between Aug. 15 and Sunday, a Springfield .40-caliber pistol, model XD, and a nickel-plated Taurus .38-caliber revolver model 85 ultra-light had been stolen from his residence. The guns are valued at a total of $880.
• A resident of the 300 block of Turpin Drive told police that a visitor to his apartment on Sunday had asked to use his Cricket cellphone, valued at $100, and then failed to return the phone.
• On Monday, a “complainant” told police that sometime between March and Sunday, someone had broken into four vacant apartments in the 100 block of Manna Drive and stolen the copper tubing connected to four water heaters, along with the electrical wiring in the walls, and three exterior heat pumps. There were no signs of forced entry into three of the apartments, however, the rear window was removed from a fourth apartment in order to gain access. The items stolen are valued at a total of $10,000, while damage to the property is estimated at $20,000.
• Early Monday morning, police discovered that Madison Vending in the 120 block of South Estill Avenue had been burglarized. Someone had made a hole in the side of the building in order to gain access and had stolen several boxes of snacks, valued at a total of $1,125.
• A resident of the 1300 block of Lancaster Road, told police that a Panasonic car stereo with a blue and silver screen, valued at $300, had been stolen from her unlocked vehicle overnight Sunday.
• On Tuesday, a resident of the 200 block of Hedgewood Lane told police that a Stihl MS 180 EZ chain saw, and a Stihl BG85 leaf blower, had been stolen from his garage. Both items are valued at a total of $250.

Even at 12 years old, Brenda Lambert knew she wanted to be a teacher one day.
“I always felt like an old person trapped in a young person's body,” said Lambert, who is retiring after 43 years of service to Berea Community School. -
Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU
Next weekend, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University campus. This is the 18th consecutive year EKU has hosted the event.
The games will be Friday through June 2. About 1,300 athletes will compete this year. -
Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report. -

Paradise Cove open through Labor Day
Opening day of Paradise Cove Family Aquatic Center coincided with a spike in temperatures Friday which reached 90 degrees. The facility, located in Richmond’s Lake Reba Park, will be open through Sept. 3. Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment. -
