Monty’s Liquor Store broken into, ransacked

‘Through the roof’

RICHMOND — Richmond police found the doings of an unwelcome liquor store customer Thursday after they responded to a possible burglary at Monty’s Liquor, 1989 Berea Road.

Officers responded to the business at 3:54 a.m. and were informed that it was a “burglary in progress,” said Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock in a news release.

“Officers discovered that the rear door was unsecured,” he said. “A check of the building failed to produce any intruders, however, officers observed that entry to the premises had been gained through the roof and a storage room had been ransacked.”

The burglar(s) left the scene with 17 cartons of assorted cigarettes valued at $595, Brock.

“An older model, white passenger van with black trim around the bottom was observed near the store at the time of the burglary,” Brock said.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Richmond Police Department at 623-1162.

Other crime:

• The manager of Sunoco Products at 100 Continental Drive reported Sunday that the business had been unlawfully entered overnight and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. The point of entry was not determined, according to police.

• Police charged Breckan N. Fox, 30, of Brooks Road, on a charge of third-degree burglary after a shoplifting incident Sunday at Walmart.

A Richmond police officer was dispatched at 9:20 p.m. to Walmart with the report of a shoplifting incident.

Fox was detained by store employees after she tried to leave with $75 in merchandise, Brock said.

It later was found that Fox had been issued a trespass warning in November 2011.

“Her entry into the store to commit a shoplifting offense after being banned from the premises resulted in the burglary charge being placed against her,” he said.

Fox was taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

• The owner of a residence in the 400 block of Springfield Drive reported Monday that a Briggs & Stratton 5500-watt Storm Responder portable generator, worth $800, was stolen from his carport during the previous two days.     

• A representative of A & A Express, 100 Industry Road, reported Nov. 28 that six commercial batteries had been stolen from two of the company’s semi-trucks during the overnight hours.

The estimated loss is $537.

  • Madison County veterans to host Memorial Day ceremonies

    The Madison County Veterans Association, which includes a number of local veterans’ organizations, will be hosting two Memorial Day ceremonies Monday.
    The first will take place at the Richmond Cemetery near the flagpole at 10 a.m., and the second will follow at noon in Madison County Memorial Gardens on Berea Road.
    Everett King of the American Legion, which is coordinating this year’s events, said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Sixth District, will be present at the morning ceremony.
    Every year the Memorial Day event has a theme. Last year’s theme was honoring Vietnam veterans, King said, while this year’s theme is honoring all American soldiers.

    Many talented local and regional crafters were set up for the event.
    One of the youngest was Laisha Gaines, a 10-year-old from Georgetown, who was selling homemade crafts with her grandmother, Jayne Gaines of Paris. Gaines said she started crafting with Laisha when she was only 3.
    Laisha has now taken up most of her grandmother's stand with her creations, from wooden owls to beaded jewelry to small quilted items that are quirky and cute.
