RICHMOND — A Douglas Court man has been charged with felony theft after the vehicle he rented from a local business was sold in Lansing, Mich.

Stephen M. Parks, 42, was charged Tuesday with theft by failure to make required disposition of property (over $10,000).

Richmond police were summoned that afternoon to Enterprise Car Rental in regards to a stolen vehicle, according to an RPD news release. The officer met with the manager and learned that Parks had rented a 2012 Chevrolet Impala for the week of Oct. 22 and had not returned the vehicle, the release stated.

The manager said she had been contacted by the Michigan State Police who told her the Impala had been sold by an unknown person on Craig’s List in Lansing.

The “unwitting buyer” had tried to register the vehicle with a fraudulent title that had been supplied by the seller, according to the release.

Parks was found at his home and was interviewed at the police station. Afterward, he was charged with the vehicle’s theft and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

Man receives charges after found passed out in hotel

Police charged a man Wednesday with several drug offenses after employees of the Red Roof Inn found him passed out at a table in the breakfast room.

Gary D. Rogers, 45, no permanent address, was charged with public intoxication, first-, second- and third-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Richmond officers were sent to the Red Roof Inn at 5 a.m. in response to a man who employees were unable to awaken at a breakfast table, according to a news release.

The officers were able to awake Rogers after several attempts, the release stated. The officers reported that they found Rogers to be under the influence of an intoxicant other than alcohol and also determined he was not a guest at the hotel.

Rogers was taken into custody, and a search found he was in possession of four oxycodone pills, 2.5 hydrocodone pills, two clonazepam pills and several items of drug paraphernalia, according to the release.

Two TVs reported stolen from Rite Aid

An employee of Rite Aid, Kim Kent Drive, reported Tuesday two televisions had been stolen from the store on Monday.

The employee told police two men entered the store and took two 32-inch LCD televisions, worth $600, without paying for them. The men left in an older model, light-colored Ford Crown Victoria that appeared to be a surplussed police vehicle, the release stated.

The car had a spotlight mounted on the driver’s side and the wheels were black with a chrome center cap.

Home burglarized

A resident in the 300 block of Hill Street reported Wednesday that his home had been broken into during the evening and several items, worth a total of $1,075, had been stolen.

Entry was gained by forcing open a rear door, according to an RPD news release.

The missing items included a blue and gray Hewlett Packard laptop computer, a black Sentry lockbox; $300, a pair of yellow gold .25 carat diamond earrings, a white-gold ring with three large diamonds on top and three diamonds on each side, and a yellow gold double heart pendant with diamonds.

Tools reported stolen

An employee of Air Economics, West Irvine Street, reported Wednesday that several tools worth $2,220 were stolen from his work truck some time during the day.

There were no signs of forced entry, according to the RPD.

Missing items included a 30-pound R-22 refrigerant cylinder; a 30-pound R-134A refrigerant cylinder; a Dewalt 18-volt drill in a case with two batteries and charger; a Fluke UEI meter in a case; a temperature clamp; an air probe; Klein lineman pliers; Klein wire strippers; 10 miscellaneous screw drivers; two drill bits; three refrigeration tube cutters; PVC cutters; numerous hand tools; and a mossy oak camouflage canvas bag.

Other thefts:

• A complainant reported Tuesday that tools, worth a total of $1,909, had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle while it was parked at either Lowe’s or McDonald’s during the morning.

The missing items were a Dewalt miter saw; a Dewalt 9.4-volt cordless drill; a Paslode angled nail gun and a Honda 1000-watt generator. 

• A resident in the 400 block of Cypress Place reported Tuesday that a set of golf clubs had been stolen from his open garage during the evening. The estimated loss is $554.

• A patron of Casa Cafe, Professional Drive, told police Monday that she accidentally left her 16 GB iPhone 4s on the table when she left the restaurant. When she realized she did not have her phone, she returned to the restaurant but found that the phone, which is worth $199, was stolen.
