Serial car thief hits Berea dealership

RICHMOND — A serial car thief who has left a string of stolen vehicles and reports of gas station drive-offs across three states has struck a Berea auto dealership.

On Wednesday, police were called to Berea Auto Sales on Chestnut Street to investigate a theft.

The business owner told police a man had taken a vehicle for a test drive but did not return, according to a release from Sgt. Jake Reed, Berea police spokesperson.

When police checked the Ohio license plate on the vehicle the suspect had left at the dealer’s lot during the test drive, they found it had been reported as stolen in Ohio and did not belong to the vehicle to which it was attached.

A check of the auto’s vehicle identification number showed that it also was listed as stolen in Ohio, according to the report.

Berea police reached the vehicle owner in Franklin County, Ohio, and learned it had been offered for sale by the owner who let a prospective buyer take it for a test drive. The driver never returned, and the car he had left during the test drive turned out to have been reported stolen in Indiana.

Police in Van Wert, Ohio, where the license plate Berea police recovered had been stolen, also said it had been taken during a false test drive and another stolen vehicle left in its place.

The stolen plate has been reported to law enforcement in Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio in association with drive-offs from gasoline stations.

The suspect is described as a white male about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and weighing about 170 lbs.

The stolen vehicle from Berea is a  2009 Gray Toyota Corolla with Kentucky license 795-JVR.
