Ballot boxes delivered all over county Monday

MADISON COUNTY —

Ballot boxes and election kits were delivered to the county’s 17 polling locations Monday morning in preparation for Election Day.

Madison County Clerk Kenny Barger and a crew from the county road department distributed 112 ballot boxes, two for each of the county’s 56 precincts.

Election officers from each precinct receive an election kit that included a tote full of roster books, pens, extension cords, various forms and prepaid cell phones, said Deputy Clerk Jessica Conner.

The ballot boxes will remain locked until election officers prepare them early Tuesday morning before polls open at 6 a.m., Barger said. All election equipment is stored year-round at Madison County Fire Station No. 2.

Every location also will have a “E-Slate” machine that sits at table-level to accommodate voters with disabilities.

Barger estimates more than 38,000 people will vote Tuesday, which is around 60 to 65 percent voter turnout and more than double the turnout of the primary elections, he said.

“That number of people have never voted before — this county grows by leaps and bounds,” Barger said.

The clerk’s office offers these suggestions to help voters have a smooth voting experience:

• The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you are not in your precinct line by 6 p.m. you will not be able to vote. High-volume voting times are 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 11 a.m.-1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

• Proper identification is required in the event a poll worker cannot make a personal identification. Approved forms of identification are: Driver’s license, credit card, Social Security card, identification with a picture and signature.

• Confirm voting location, party affiliation and eligibility to vote at the Voter Information Center at www.elect.ky.gov.

• If any occurrences of voter fraud are witnessed, call the Attorney General’s Office toll free at 800-328-8683 or the county clerk’s office, 624-4703.

Preparation began months ago for this year’s general election, Barger said..

“We have trained over 300 poll workers who are ready to assist our voters on Election Day,” Barger said. “In addition, based on voter concerns in the May primary, we have added a shuttle service for those voters voting at the Perkins Building on EKU’s campus, improved parking at Madison Central High School and worked with the city of Berea to improve the lighting in the Russel Acton Folk Center.”

Interested parties are welcome to watch the results as they come in at the courthouse, 101 W. Main St., after 6 p.m., Barger said. Returns also may be viewed online at www.madisoncounty.ky.us under the county clerk link and on cable television on Madison County Public Access Channel 46.

The county clerk’s office will be closed for all nonelection-related services on Tuesday. For more details, call the clerk’s office at 624-4703.

  • Three Richmond thefts reported Tuesday-Thursday

    Richmond police are investigating thefts reported from Tuesday through Thursday.
    An employee of Baptist Health, Eastern Bypass, reported Thursday that her vehicle had been broken into during the evening and a small shoulder purse was stolen. The purse contained several debit/credit cards, $70 in cash, and a Pantech slider cellular telephone. Estimated loss: $595.
