RICHMOND —
A former employee of an adult day care facility waived her right to a preliminary hearing on an abuse charge Wednesday in Madison District Court.
Verna Campbell, 46, of Richmond, is charged with wanton abuse or neglect of an adult for an alleged incident in June 2009 involving a resident at the Independent Opportunities group home in Richmond.
Campbell, who was an assistant adult treatment supervisor at the facility, allegedly pushed a patient into a shower, subjecting him to hot and cold shower temperatures and spraying the man in the nose and mouth, according to investigators with the state attorney general’s office.
Campbell also is alleged to have forced the man onto a changing table before using her shoes to cause abrasions and marks on his arms and feet.
Attorney Tim Despotes appeared with Campbell to waive the case to a grand jury Wednesday before Madison District Judge Brandy O. Brown.
Campbell is free after posting a $5,000 cash bond following her arrest last month. She was one of two former employees at the home charged with abusing a resident following an investigation by the attorney general’s office.
Hosea Farris, 58, was accused of slapping and pulling the hair of a resident during a September 2009 incident at the home. A wanton abuse charge against Farris was sent to a grand jury following a preliminary hearing earlier this month.
Counterfeit cash
A South Porter Drive man accused of passing counterfeit $5 bills saw his case continued to mid-August.
Robert Devon Dunn, 26, allegedly passed a counterfeit $5 bill at a Texaco gas station on the Eastern Bypass and two of the bills at Burger King on the same day last month, according to Richmond police.
Dunn, who is free on a partially secured $5,000 bond, appeared with his attorney, Wesley Browne, who agreed with prosecutors to continue a preliminary hearing to Aug. 18 at 1:30 p.m.
Dunn was identified as a suspect in the case after Richmond police released surveillance video from the gas station showing the man who passed the fake bill.
Police received several calls identifying the slender, tattooed white male in the video as Dunn, according to Chief Larry Brock.
After obtaining a warrant to search Dunn’s home last week, police seized what they believe is more counterfeit currency and paraphernalia used to produce the false bills, Brock said.
