Residents asked to donate blood to aid Madison Countian

RICHMOND — A Madison County family is asking EKU students and community members to donate blood this week to aid their son in his upcoming surgery.

Terri Killin, the mother of Nicholas Killin, is asking donors who have A+ blood type to donate so her son will have replacement blood during his back surgery in three to four weeks. Killin suffers from severe scoliosis, and the planned 12- to 14-hour surgery will involve work on his hip and placing rods in his back, Terri Killin said.

The regularly scheduled blood drive at EKU started Monday and will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Powell Building.

People who have A+ blood may contribute by stating “I am here to donate replacement blood in Nicholas Killin’s name.”

However, all blood types will be accepted during the blood drive, which will go to save lives in his Nicholas’ name, according to Terri Killin.

Although Nicholas may not receive the specific A+ units donated at EKU, families who know their loved ones are scheduled for major surgeries are encouraged to promote donation to help replenish the blood supply, according to Martha Osborne, Kentucky Blood Center executive director of marketing and recruitment.

“It’s a nice gesture to show the family you care,” Osborne said.
