Five manhole covers were stolen Aug. 10 from an area under construction at a Richmond apartment complex.
On Aug. 9, two other manhole covers were stolen, one from a sidewalk, the other from a grassy area. The manhole covers are made of solid cast iron.
A resident of Robinson Terrace, in the 100 block of Robinson Drive, told police that the manhole covers were stolen Aug. 10 from a pipeline area under construction, said Larry Brock, Richmond police chief. The resident also said he saw two white males carrying the manhole covers to a small, maroon four-door Ford car, Brock said. The men were described as being in their early 20s. The manhole covers are valued at a total of $500.
Brock said there was no evidence to prove whether the two thefts are related.
Model, toy cars stolen
On Aug. 7, several model and toy cars were stolen from a storage unit at A&A Storage in the 2100 block of Catalpa Loop. Reported stolen were: approximately 30 Mopar model cars, 40 to 50 Johnny Lightning, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, approximately 50 Mopar die cast cars, five remote-control cars, 20 18-gallon totes, about 25 DVDs and 30 VHS tapes, a 27-inch Zenith TV and two Kenwood speakers, Brock said. The items were reported stolen Aug. 9, and are valued at $15,000.
Other crimes:
• The owner of an apartment complex in the 300 block of Eastern Bypass told police Aug. 10 that a former tenant had removed an unknown brand refrigerator, valued at $1,000, from one of the apartments while vacating the premises.
• On Aug. 11, the owner of a residence in the 300 block of West Kentucky Avenue, told police that several feet of copper wire, valued at $300, had been cut from the crawl space of the residence sometime the previous week. The house was being remodeled at the time of the theft.
• A resident of the 1200 block of Race Street told police that overnight Aug. 10, a Werner 16-foot extension ladder colored blue and sliver, valued at $370, was stolen from the residence.
• On Aug. 11, a resident of an apartment in the 400 block of Garden City Drive told police that a Phaser Meter, valued at $450, had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle overnight.
• A resident of the 200 block of Stratford Drive told police that $125 cash was stolen from her unlocked vehicle overnight Wednesday. The money was stolen from a purse left on the car’s front seat.
• On Thursday, a resident of the 300 block of Remmington Court told police that sometime during the past several months, many items, valued at $3,400, had been stolen from his residence. Reported stolen was an undetermined amount of currency, a 1.25-karat diamond ring in a five-stone marquis setting and a yellow gold necklace.

Years ago, a little blonde-haired girl from Rockcastle County gathered her friends to “play school” in a 10-by-10 foot playhouse her father built.
Even at 12 years old, Brenda Lambert knew she wanted to be a teacher one day.
“I always felt like an old person trapped in a young person's body,” said Lambert, who is retiring after 43 years of service to Berea Community School. -
Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU
Next weekend, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University campus. This is the 18th consecutive year EKU has hosted the event.
The games will be Friday through June 2. About 1,300 athletes will compete this year. -
Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report. -

Paradise Cove open through Labor Day
Opening day of Paradise Cove Family Aquatic Center coincided with a spike in temperatures Friday which reached 90 degrees. The facility, located in Richmond’s Lake Reba Park, will be open through Sept. 3. Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Undefeated academic team brings pride to Madison Middle School
Madison Middle School 6th and 7th grade academic teams have been undefeated for the last two years.
The 8th grade team also has done well, having some students qualify to compete at the state level. -

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment. -
