RICHMOND —
From an open house Friday, memorial observances Saturday morning and Monday afternoon to paratroopers delivering the game football to Roy Kidd Stadium on Saturday afternoon, a variety of activities at Eastern Kentucky University will honor past and present members of the American military.
On Friday, Nov. 9, the EKU Military and Veterans Affairs Office will host an open house at its new location, 317 Lancaster Ave., a converted home adjacent to Irvine-McDowell Park. Refreshments will be served.
Several activities are planned for Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a memorial service at Memorial Plaza (adjacent to the Meditation Chapel).
A demonstration by EKU’s national champion Pershing Rifles at 10:45 a.m. at the New Science Building will precede the 11 a.m. dedication of an exhibit honoring the late William Jackson Brewer Jr., for whom the former Brewer Building was named, and the service of other EKU veterans, including Paul Van Hoose and John Hanlon.
Brewer, a London native, was a straight-A student and distinguished military graduate who earned a regular Army commission upon his graduation from EKU in 1969. He was killed during combat in Cambodia in May 1970, his third month of duty in Southeast Asia, while serving as an infantry platoon leader. Later that year, the Brewer Building was dedicated in his honor and served as home to EKU’s public safety operations until it was razed in 2007 to make room for the New Science Building.
The exhibit, located in the New Science Building atrium and entitled “A Tradition of Service and Honor,” is near a window overlooking where the Brewer Building once stood.
The Brewer family has deep roots at EKU. The honoree’s son is a graduate of the University’s Environmental Health Science Program, and three sisters attended Eastern.
The veterans display ceremony also will feature the unveiling of a time capsule that had been placed in the Brewer Building cornerstone.
Activities then shift to Roy Kidd Stadium, where a jump team from the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell will deliver the game ball prior to the EKU-Murray State football game, which begins at 1 p.m.
At halftime of the game, all veterans in attendance will be asked to assemble behind the visitor-side bleachers and march onto the field behind their respective service flags as the EKU Marching Band plays the appropriate service hymn. The ceremony also will feature a presentation to Andrew Napier, an EKU senior from Richmond, recipient of one of only 59
Pat Tillman Military Scholarships nationally this year.
On Monday, Nov. 12, a “Talk of Heroes” ceremony from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. outside the Powell Building will include essay readings by the five winners of the Talk of Heroes essay contest, guest speakers, an opportunity to sign postcards for troops, and more.
Veterans Week activities conclude on Wednesday, Nov. 14, with a Vet Expo, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Perkins Building. The event will highlight various resources available for veterans and their families, as well as EKU displays, and more.

Attorneys argue over Medicaid lawsuit
