The Monster Bash & Costume Bash 4 Large Cash is scheduled Saturday, 6 p.m. to midnight at Blackii Whyte’s Barn and Grill, a 75-acre farm off Battlefield Memorial Highway between Berea and Richmond. The cost is $10 at the gate and those who show up in a costume have a chance to win $1,000.
“A 'grand' is nothing to sneeze at,” Whyte said.
All proceeds will benefit the town of West Liberty, a small community in Morgan County devastated by violent storms in early March. An EF3 tornado damaged close to 90 percent of businesses and government offices, according to the city's website.
The cash prize was donated by The Botany Bay, Currier’s Music World and Monty’s Spirits to draw a crowd to the event, Whyte said. “Blackii Whyte TicketTees” (a T-shirt) will be available at all three businesses for $10 and will serve as a “ticket” to enter the event Saturday.
Representatives from each of the three businesses will select the winner of the costume contest for the $1000 cash prize, Whyte said.
L&P Liquors also will have TicketTees available.
Whyte is printing and supplying the T-shirts himself, so all proceeds from the event will reach the West Liberty storm victims, he said.
The event will feature bands: Lucid Grey, Far From Safety, The Kentucky Blue Collar Band, The Kountry Kings and Semantix.
The Barn & Grill features a 50-foot wide, fully-equipped stage, an inside stage and a smaller 16-foot stage nearby.
According to The Weather Channel, the forecast for Saturday predicts a high of 51-degrees with a 40 percent chance of rain. If that is the case, Whyte will move the event inside the barn, which houses a stage and can fit several hundred people, he said.
“Don’t let a little bad weather keep you from coming to support West Liberty,” Whyte said. “Remember folks, the people of West Liberty had a touch of ‘bad weather’ too.”
In September, the Rocktopia music festival was launched to raise money for West Liberty and more than 35 bands from all over Kentucky were scheduled to perform at the event.
However, the show was “an incredible artistic success, with a dismal financial outcome,” said Whyte. “But, we do not accept failure — we go again.”
Whyte also is forming a team of individuals who are skilled in home repair to visit West Liberty and help with rebuilding efforts.
“Then we'll do it again and again until West Liberty is restored to its former glory,” Whyte said.
The official address of the venue is 6039 Battlefield Memorial Highway (Hwy 421), but 1283 McKee Road also can be entered in a GPS. Both addresses have been known to work, Whyte said. Either way, a large yellow sign next to a gravel driveway will lead visitors to the Barn & Grill.
