Milwaukee man jailed in Saturday assault

A Wisconsin man was charged with second-degree assault Saturday after allegedly breaking his friend’s eye sockets.

Richmond police were called to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center around 3 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a man being treated for severe injuries from a fight, said Chief Larry Brock.

The victim suffered a broken jaw and both of his eye sockets were fractured, Brock said.

The victim’s friend, Adam L. Ashcraft, 34, of Milwaukee, was arrested in connection with the alleged assault.

Police determined that an altercation between Ashcraft and the victim apparently escalated into a physical confrontation, Brock said.

Ashcraft was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center following his arrest. The victim was transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment.

Poker game robbery

A poker game at an apartment in the 200 block of McDaniel Avenue ended in a robbery when one player attacked a resident and stole her purse.

Brock said the incident occurred Saturday when one of the players became upset over losing a poker hand. The suspect began throwing items and then grabbed the resident’s purse and attempted to leave.

The resident then attempted to grab the purse and the suspect punched her in the face and pushed her onto a couch before fleeing with the purse.

The purse contained an undisclosed amount of cash in addition to prescription medication, a Samsung cellular phone and personal identification. Brock said the purse and its contents were valued at $1,254.

Other crimes

• A burglary was reported Feb. 9 at an apartment in the 200 block of S. Keeneland Drive.

The home was unlocked when the burglary occurred overnight, Brock said. Reported missing were a black purse with matching wallet, a Canon Powershot SD880 digital camera, a Nintendo Wii video game console, a credit card and personal checks. The items were valued at $1,200.

• The resident of a home in the 1000 block of Brandy Lane reported Thursday that the rear door of the home had been forced in and items were stolen.

Reported missing were a small fire safe, $400 in cash, a yellow gold men’s ring with diamonds and onyx and some personal identification. The items were valued at $1,450.

• A Creative Zen MP3 player and a red Nikon Coolpix digital camera were reported stolen Friday from an apartment in the 1600 block of Foxhaven Drive. The items were valued at $250.

Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU

Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report.

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment.

Officers responded to a call in the 1000 block of Scaffold Cane Road about a man trying to break into a home, according to a release from BPD Public Information Officer Jake Reed.
