Local art councils offering summer camps

RAAC camp July 9-13; BAC camps July 16-27

RICHMOND —  

Still looking for some summer fun? Join some of the activities the Richmond Area Arts Council and Berea Arts Council have scheduled for July.
RAAC’s last summer arts camp, “Where the Wild Things Are,” will be July 9-13 and feature, for the second time, the Lexington Children’s Theatre. 
Children ages 6 and 7 will be part of a “Playmakers” class that will explore the story for a week from 9 a.m to 4 p.m.
During the camp, the students will work to create their own play using voice, body and imagination through the joys of music, art, dance and drama. Class members will also form their own characters, dialogue and story. 
On Friday’s session will showcase scenery made by the group. The members will also dress is costume.
Students should bring a sack lunch to class each day.

BAC Arts Camp July 16-27
The Berea Arts Council is offering a variety of art classes for 8 to 12 year olds daily for two weeks, July 16-27. 
Classes include: “Illusions in Drawing,” “Drip, Splatter, Paint!,” “Appalachian Storytelling,” “Theatrical Movements,” “Acting and Being,” Playing with Mud,” (two days), “Picture Perfect” (photography), “The Beauty of Nature,” (creating natural sculptures), and “Altered Clothing” (includes tie-dyeing).
Campers can sign up for individual days or all of the two week camp. Each day will provide a unique and fun art experience provided by experienced teachers, according to Gwen Childs, BAC executive director.
Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The camp takes place in Knapp Hall on the Berea College campus. Visit the website at www.bereaartscouncil.org for a schedule of classes. Registration forms available online.

  • Madison County veterans to host Memorial Day ceremonies

    The Madison County Veterans Association, which includes a number of local veterans’ organizations, will be hosting two Memorial Day ceremonies Monday.
    The first will take place at the Richmond Cemetery near the flagpole at 10 a.m., and the second will follow at noon in Madison County Memorial Gardens on Berea Road.
    Everett King of the American Legion, which is coordinating this year’s events, said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Sixth District, will be present at the morning ceremony.
    Every year the Memorial Day event has a theme. Last year’s theme was honoring Vietnam veterans, King said, while this year’s theme is honoring all American soldiers.

    The Kirksville Community Center was packed with artists and craft lovers Saturday for the Spring Gathering craft/vendor fair.
    Many talented local and regional crafters were set up for the event.
    One of the youngest was Laisha Gaines, a 10-year-old from Georgetown, who was selling homemade crafts with her grandmother, Jayne Gaines of Paris. Gaines said she started crafting with Laisha when she was only 3.
    Laisha has now taken up most of her grandmother's stand with her creations, from wooden owls to beaded jewelry to small quilted items that are quirky and cute.
