Bulldog Media owner waives theft hearing

By Brian Smith

The president of Bulldog Media LLC waived a preliminary hearing Wednesday on a charge of theft by deception related to a $2,500 payment made to his company for Web design work.

Jeffery A. Jernigan, 40, appeared briefly with his attorney, public defender Sarah Bryant, to formally waive the hearing before Madison District Judge Charles Hardin.

The charge stems from a payment made to Bulldog Media in August 2008 by Kelly Taylor for a Web site for her husband’s construction company, according to court records.

The site never was designed, and attempts to reach Jernigan were unsuccessful, the arrest warrant states.

Additional theft by deception charges against Jernigan for alleged cold checks were continued to January by agreement.

Jernigan already has one case pending before a Madison County grand jury following a hearing Dec. 2 on a theft by deception charge for allegedly defrauding Madison Bank of more than $15,000.

The Lexington Road address listed on the Bulldog Media Web site as the company’s “corporate headquarters” is vacant, and phone numbers for the company are no longer in service.

Dairy Mart robbery

The alleged getaway driver in an early-morning Dec. 9 robbery at the Dairy Mart on Commercial Drive agreed to continue his case a second time to allow the public defender’s office to take the case.

James Reynolds Robinson, 46, of Highlands Drive, is charged with complicity to first-degree robbery and driving under the influence in the incident.

Robinson was behind the wheel of a car pulled over by police near the scene of the robbery, and a passenger in the car, Billie Masters, was identified as the suspect in the robbery.

Robinson had attempted to hire a private attorney since his arrest, but had been unable to secure funds to retain a lawyer, he told Hardin.

Hardin continued the case for an additional week to allow the Department of Public Advocacy to take over Robinson’s defense and prepare for a preliminary hearing.

The new hearing date is Dec. 30.
