Police arrested a Bell County man Saturday night on a first-degree criminal mischief charge after he allegedly shattered the window of a Main Street nightclub.
Brenton K. Slusher, no age available, of Calvin, was arrested after allegedly breaking the front window of Jerzees on E. Main Street around 1:20 a.m.
Police were called to the scene after the window was broken, said Sgt. Willard Reardon, Richmond Police Department spokesman.
Officers determined Slusher was a suspect after employees stated he had been ejected from the club following a disturbance, Reardon said.
Slusher allegedly then broke the window and fled on foot, Reardon said. He was found hiding behind an air conditioning unit on S. First Street and arrested.
The damage to the building was estimated at $1,500. Slusher was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
Stolen credit card
A Berea woman was arrested Thursday after police say she attempted to use a stolen credit card at the Richmond Walmart.
Abigail N. Durham, 24, of Reed Hill, was charged with receiving stolen property following the attempt, Reardon said.
A purse containing the card had been reported stolen a few days earlier from the Walmart in Berea, Reardon said.
Additional charges against Durham in connection with fraudulent use of the card and forged checks are pending, Reardon said. Durham was lodged in the Madison County detention center.
Thefts from cars
Richmond police issued a warning Monday to residents about a rash of thefts from vehicles.
Reardon said a common theme in the thefts was a window being broken to gain entry to the car.
An AutoZone employee reported Dec. 8 that a RadioShack scanner and a CD carrier, all valued at $1,000, had been stolen from his vehicle after the driver’s side window was broken.
A Casa Fiesta patron reported Friday that an Apple iPod Touch and an Acer laptop computer, all valued at $1,100, were stolen from his car after the passenger side window was broken.
An amplifier and subwoofer were reported stolen Sunday from a vehicle parked in the 100 block of O’Roarke Drive. Police found no sign of forced entry in that theft.
Reardon advised citizens not to leave valuables in plain sight inside their vehicle, even when the car is locked, and to park in well-lit, populated areas when possible.
Other crimes
• Arcade machines at the Richmond Skate Center were broken into Saturday after a burglar was able to open the front door. An estimated $15 in change was stolen from the machines.
• A Kroger shopper left her purse in a shopping cart Saturday and discovered the purse was missing after returning to the store.
The purse contained $15 in cash, a Samsung cellular phone, credit cards and identification, and was valued at $111.
• The Home Store & More was the victim of a theft Wednesday when a brown sofa and loveseat valued at $1,698 were taken from the store’s warehouse.
• A 55-inch Sony flat-screen television was stolen from a storage unit at Bypass Storage on S. Killarney Lane some time between Aug. 7 and Dec. 7. The unit’s owner reported the theft Dec. 7 and told police the lock had been cut from the unit. The television was valued at $2,000.

Years ago, a little blonde-haired girl from Rockcastle County gathered her friends to “play school” in a 10-by-10 foot playhouse her father built.
Even at 12 years old, Brenda Lambert knew she wanted to be a teacher one day.
“I always felt like an old person trapped in a young person's body,” said Lambert, who is retiring after 43 years of service to Berea Community School. -
Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU
Next weekend, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University campus. This is the 18th consecutive year EKU has hosted the event.
The games will be Friday through June 2. About 1,300 athletes will compete this year. -
Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report. -

Paradise Cove open through Labor Day
Opening day of Paradise Cove Family Aquatic Center coincided with a spike in temperatures Friday which reached 90 degrees. The facility, located in Richmond’s Lake Reba Park, will be open through Sept. 3. Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment. -
