The Daniel Boone Chapter of the American Red Cross has been busy this month responding to eight fires in its seven-county area in less than 10 days that left eight families homeless.
“We typically see an increase in single-family house fires once the weather turns cold,” said Katy Sulfridge, the chapter’s executive director, “but this many fires in such a short time is unusual.”
Since Dec. 1, the chapter has responded to three in Lincoln County, two in Rockcastle County, two in Lee County and one in Owsley County. The chapter also covers Madison, Jackson and Garrard counties.
One Madison County family was displaced by fire in November.
Since the chapter’s fiscal year began July 1, 35 families displaced by home fires have been assisted, Sulfridge said.
To support all families affected by a disaster, the chapter is making a special plea for donations.
“When disaster strikes, the chapter provides food, clothing, shelter, emotional support, and other assistance depending on the disaster client’s needs,” Sulfridge said. “The American Red Cross is not a government agency and each chapter is funded mainly by private donations from its local community.”
The Daniel Boone Chapter also receives support from the United Way of the Bluegrass and Heart of Kentucky United Way.
