The baseball field at B. Michael Caudill Middle School now has a name.
Madison County School Board members on Thursday unanimously selected the name Daniel Wells Field, honoring a Madison County native who was actively involved in sports during his life.
Wells played baseball and basketball at Madison Central High School, graduating in 1960.
His father, also named Daniel Wells, owned the land the field rests on, but sold it several years ago to Madison County Schools.
“We’re very grateful and appreciative,” Billy Wells said of the decision to name the field after his brother. “We were surprised and honored.”
Like his brother, Billy played baseball and basketball at Madison Central High School, graduating in 1968.
In praising the decision to name the field after Wells, board member Glyndon Green said, “We’ve done well.”
Green, who attended school the same time as Daniel, said “I enjoyed playing ball against him. He was a great guy.”
Madison County Schools echoed Green’s thoughts.
“We are excited about the naming of Daniel Wells Field,” said Erin Stewart, community education director for Madison County Schools. “It is a good way for the district to honor an exemplary young man and a great family.”
A monument will be constructed at the field in honor of Daniel Wells.
It will be unveiled during baseball season. Baseball in Kentucky is slated to begin play on March 22, 2010.
Daniel’s grandson, Lane Owen, is a student at Foley Middle School and if he goes out for the baseball team, he will get a chance to play on the field named for his grandfather, said Billy.
