Saturday is ‘Edible Landscaping Day’

Saturday will be “Edible Landscaping Day” in Berea as Mayor Steve Connelly reads a proclamation at 11 a.m. at the city welcome center in Old Town and assists with planting two gooseberry plants donated by Sustainable Berea.

The purpose of Edible Landscaping Day is to educate and encourage people to convert some of their yard and lawn space into an “edible landscape,” said Cheyenne Olson of Sustainable Berea.

Approximately 60 fruit trees and shrubs will be sold as part of the event. Raised beds, rain barrels and the 2010 Re-skilling Berea calendar, focusing on food production, also will be on sale, she said.

Information on planting and caring for fruit trees and shrubs will be available and horticulturalist Derek Law will answer questions. Soil-sampling bags and instructions from the Cooperative Extension Service for soil testing will be available. Apple cider and home-baked fruit treats round out the offerings.

Students from the Berea College general studies program took the lead in organizing the event.
