Berea’s annual community Thanksgiving service will be hosted this year by Berea United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. The worship service, sponsored by the Berea Ministerial Association, brings the community together for a moment of thanks and praise marking the Thanksgiving season.
Music will be led by the Methodist church’s Praise Team, using contemporary music and instruments in the worship. This year’s speaker will be Rev. Rachel Small Stokes, who is the new associate pastor of Union Church. She came to Berea from New York City, where she was ordained in the United Church of Christ and served in a congregation for three years as a minister of Christian education.
Rev. Small Stokes has a degree in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master of divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. She has also spent time as a United Methodist missionary in Seattle, Wa., where she served in a church and drop-in center for homeless women. Having grown up in Morgantown, W. Va., Rev. Small Stokes is glad to be back in the mountains and celebrating the Appalachian culture — although she does miss the bagels! She and her wife Leslie are enjoying the wonderful hospitality they’ve received here in Berea and look forward to building relationships throughout the town.
