RICHMOND —
Monday, police were dispatched to Kohl’s around 5:30 p.m. to investigate a shoplifting complaint. Store employees reported Tony R. Barrett, 39, of Keri Ann Drive, had attempted to leave the store without paying for a set of sheets he had concealed under his clothing.
“When employees attempted to detain Barrett outside the store, he pushed an employee and attempted to flee, which resulted in a physical struggle,” said Richmond Police chief Larry Brock.
The employees detained Barrett until officers arrived, he said.
Barrett was charged with second-degree robbery, a Class C felony, because the alleged physical struggle, under state law, would elevate to felony status what otherwise would be a misdemeanor theft charge. He remained lodged Tuesday in the Madison County Detention Center under a $5,550 cash bond.
Three charged, guitar returned
Police have charged Shauna Baker, 26, Barringer Lane, with first-degree burglary in connection with a December 2012 incident.
On Christmas Eve, a resident in the 900 block of Villa Drive reported his apartment had been broken into during the previous two days. Baker allegedly gained entry by forcing open the rear door.
The resident reported the following items missing: an Ibanez electric bass guitar; a black Sony 32-inch LCD television; a black Sony 17-inch laptop computer, serial number SCND9193SBK; a black Sony PlayStation 2 gaming system; and a Snake Charmer .410 gauge shotgun.
During the investigation, police discovered Baker had been seen at the rear of the apartment near the time the break-in was thought to have occurred.
On Dec. 28, police charged Carl. E. Ruppe, 33, Ballard Drive, and Clifford R. White, 34, Red Lick Road, for receiving stolen property when police determined the two had been in possession of the stolen guitar and transferred it to a third party two days after the theft, according to the police report.
The investigation also revealed that Baker had been with the two men when the guitar was transferred, according to the police report.
The guitar, valued at $500, was recovered and returned to the owner.
Other crimes:
• Friday, a resident in the 700 block of Red House Road reported a Skil radial arm saw had
been stolen from an unsecured storage building on his property during the early morning hours. The estimated loss is $100.
• Saturday, a resident in the 100 block of South Killarney Lane reported his apartment had been broken into during the past day and $2,500 in cash and a PlayStation 3 gaming system were stolen. Entry was gained by breaking a bedroom window. The estimated loss is $2665.

Madison County veterans to host Memorial Day ceremonies
The Madison County Veterans Association, which includes a number of local veterans’ organizations, will be hosting two Memorial Day ceremonies Monday.
The first will take place at the Richmond Cemetery near the flagpole at 10 a.m., and the second will follow at noon in Madison County Memorial Gardens on Berea Road.
Everett King of the American Legion, which is coordinating this year’s events, said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Sixth District, will be present at the morning ceremony.
Every year the Memorial Day event has a theme. Last year’s theme was honoring Vietnam veterans, King said, while this year’s theme is honoring all American soldiers. -

A discrepancy in police records led to an unusual hearing in a drug trafficking case Thursday in Madison Circuit Court.
The attorney for 49-year-old Carla Rae Clontz made a motion earlier this month for a bill of particulars hearing.
