RICHMOND — Eastern Kentucky University is one of 14 colleges and universities nationwide selected to participate in the Tillman Military Scholars Program for the 2012-13 academic year.

The program honors Pat Tillman, who left a successful professional football career to join the U.S. Army and who later died in combat in Afghanistan. Providing scholarships that cover tuition as well as other needs, such as housing and child care, the program supports the nation’s active and veteran servicemembers and their spouses by removing financial barriers to completing an academic degree.

“The Pat Tillman Foundation is partnering with each of these institutions because each is a leader in support services for student veterans, active servicemembers and their families on campus,” according to a news release from the Foundation.

Service members from all branches of the military, both pre- and post-9/11 service, who wish to start, finish or further their education are eligible to apply for a Tillman Military Scholarship. Spouses and survivors of service members also are eligible to apply. Awards will be based on applicants’ educational and career ambitions, record of military service, leadership potential, record of personal achievement, essay question responses, demonstrated service and desire to serve.

Applications may be submitted between Feb. 13 and March 16. All applications should be submitted through the Pat Tillman Foundation web site (www.pattillmanfoundation.org/tillman-military-scholars/apply/) and then forwarded to the Associate Director of Veterans Affairs via EKUVeteransAffairs@eku.edu for review. The committee will then recommend the highest scoring applicants to the Pat Tillman Foundation as potential recipients of the scholarship. The final selection will then be made by the Pat Tillman Foundation.

Since the program’s inception in 2008, the Pat Tillman Foundation has provided more than $2.2 million in scholarships to 171 active servicemembers, veterans and dependents. These scholarship funds are just a portion of the Tillman Military Scholar experience, which also focuses on guiding an engaged community and providing essential resources that enable Scholars to serve and lead in their local communities.

The past two years, Military Times Edge magazine has named EKU No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in its annual rankings of the nation’s four-year colleges and universities for its commitment to helping military veterans further their education. In addition, Eastern was recognized by G.I. Jobs magazine as a Military Friendly School each of the past three years.

In 2010, EKU unveiled Operation Veteran Success, a series of initiatives designed to make the university an even more veteran-helpful campus. In Fall 2011, EKU’s enrollment of 16,000-plus students included 910 military veterans, up from 658 the previous fall.

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment.

Officers responded to a call in the 1000 block of Scaffold Cane Road about a man trying to break into a home, according to a release from BPD Public Information Officer Jake Reed.

Pets of the Week from the Madison County Animal Shelter
The Madison County Animal Shelter is located at 1386 Richmond Road in Berea. Shelter hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Animals available for adoption can be seen from noon to close Monday through Saturday. The adoption fee for cats and kittens is $10. Puppies and grown dogs may be adopted for $25.
