Getting around the Berea Community School area has just gotten a lot easier.
Safety improvements for child pedestrians will be unveiled Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in front of the BCS board office.
One improvement to be unveiled Thursday is the “Pirate’s Plank,” a new multi-modal path in the BCS parking area which safely links the school, parks and walking trails around the school.
Safe Kids Madison County and FedEx organized a pedestrian safety task force of community leaders who have been working to improve permanent walking conditions for children in Berea as part of the national Walk This Way program.
In addition to creating the “Pirate’s Plank,” the task force also has:
• Placed countdown pedestrian signals at two Berea intersections
• Provided pedestrian safety booklets with the “Safe Routes to School Map” to help identify safe routes for children to use
• Improved the crosswalk at the vehicle entrance to the BCS parking lot
• Identified additional crosswalks that will receive the high visibility stripping before the end of the year
Entering its 13th year, the nationwide Walk This Way program focuses on making physical modifications to environments where children have been involved in vehicle crashes as pedestrians.
The program teaches safe behaviors to motorists and child pedestrians and creates safer, more walkable communities.
Nationwide every year more than 244 children ages 14 and under die from pedestrian-related injuries and more than 13,000 go to the emergency room.
