RICHMOND —
If it's hazardous material and it's in your home, it's welcome.
Madison County's annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Madison County Road Department-South, 208 Clarksville Lane, in the former Tri-State Garage. The location is just south of the US 25/421 junction.
“During last year's event, 9,418 pounds of hazardous materials were removed from Madison County homes,” said Scott Tussey, the county's solid-waste coordinator.
Items being collected include: Automotive products, fertilizers, pesticides, oil-based paints, solvents/cleaners, items containing mercury, electronics and batteries.
A few items will be refused if brought for disposal, Tussey said. Those include latex paints, tires, ammunition/explosives and radioactive materials.
Those wanting to dispose of latex paints can receive hardening crystals year round by calling 624-4709.
“It is very important to get rid of these items because any household hazardous material sitting around is a potential threat inside your home,” Tussey said. “This is a one-day-only event that our citizens are able to get rid of our household hazardous waste that accumulates in houses year round.”
Each person in the U.S. produces an average of four pounds of household hazardous waste each year, totaling about 530,000 tons, according to information from the Environmental Protection Agency, www.epa.gov.
The average U.S. household generates more than 20 pounds of household hazardous waste per year, the website states.
“The trash haulers do not want these items intermingled in with the regular trash stream because it is a hazard to transport and for them to go in our conventional landfills,” Tussey said.
Funding for the event is provided partly by a grant from the state’s Energy and Environment Cabinet and the Division of Waste Management's Kentucky PRIDE fund.
